Title of Piece: Sunrise and Safari for Concert Band
Composer: Adam Gorb
Publisher: Maecents Music
Perfomance Time: approx. 8 minutes
Performance Notes: If fewer than three suspended cymbals are available, performers may experiment striking different parts of the instruments to produce contrasting pitches and timbres with two (or even one).
Senza misura, Ad lib and free time: improvisation is permitted and encouraged with regard to rhythm and even the tempo of musical lines. These may be played either complete or in part, but new notes may not be added. Where strict and free materials is used simultaneously (e.g. Sunrise fig 5 et seq.), synchronisation between the two is not expected, though at fig 7 all improvising musicians must enter together.
If an oboe is not available, it is still possible to perform this work by playing the cues shown in Trumpet 1 for Singapore Sunrise and Clarinet 1 for Night Safari.
Night Safari: fig 21 et seq. Clarinets and saxophones instructed to remove mouthpieces may prefer alternatively to use a second mouthpiece though this should not be necessary.
Programme Note: This work consists of two movements which may be played together or separately. Each movement lasts around three and a half minutes.
The first, Singapore Sunrise, is suitable for school bands, and is based on the Singaporean melody ‘Ikan Kekek’. It’s characterised by a mysterious opening with early-morning birdcalls on woodwinds before the melody takes over and rises to a climax.
Night Safari is intended for slightly more advanced bands and is a depiction of Singapore’s world famous Safari Park that can be visited only in the dark. I have tried to capture a sense of excitement and danger as the wild animals are seen (or sometimes just heard) in their natural habitat. The piece is a sort of jazz waltz, but with a lot of surprising sounds!
Sunrise and Safari was commissioned as the test piece for concert bands for the Singapore Youth Festival 2007.

----------
So, band practice once again. Mr Sukit gave warm up for 1 hour and then the librarians distrubuted the set piece, Sunrise and Safari. The piece consists of two movements, Singapore Sunrise and Night Safari. Our band will probably be playing the second one because it requires more techniques, and less of tone and balance.
At 11am, Mr Tan came in and wanted us to lay out all the instruments in the Newton Room. But then it took so long all the Excos and SLs were pumped 30, geez. Then the new instruments were allocated to the members. After that we were dismissed.
I'm still wondering whether they'll be any new horns...
My group woke up at 6.30 to bathe. Then we sat around the gallery, waiting for the others to wake up. Then it was 7.45, time for breakfast.
We headed to the D&T lab for breakfast. We had bread with peanut butter and jam, and also some biscuits. The Milo turned out disastrous, so no one drank it.

Back at school
When we arrived back at school at 5.15pm, we went back to our tents, only to find out everything has been flooded because of the rain, bleah. We took out all our things and laid them over the gallery floor to dry.
After that was free time all the way until 7pm. Some sat in the gallery, some went to bathe, some went to the basketball court to play basketball, and the rest went to the D&T lab to help with dinner. Oh, and the Yamaha instruments came before dinner.
At 7+, all of us gathered in the D&T lab for dinner. It also served as a farewell party for the sec 4s. Some alumni also turned up, such as Sean, Daniel, and Gerald.
As a tradition, the graduating sec 4s would select songs from the library and everyone would play. We played -
Persis Overture A Movement for Rosa Can't take my Eyes off you (Flute Solo) Rhapsody for Euphonium Discovery Fantasy
Everything ended around 12am. Since we couldn't sleep in the tents, we slept in the Gallery. Some slept at the first floor study area.

Exclusive Coverage : Band Camp Day 1
Hello people, I'm back from band camp! Can say that it was damn fun, but tiring. I shall elaborate activity by activity, haha.
Fall In & Pitching of tents -
Went to school at 6.30am. Then we waited for Aaron to open the band room so we could put our barang barang inside. After that, we were allocated to our groups.
After the grouping, we went to the field to set up our tents. Dickson brought his own tent and king-sized air bed for the Ex-Cos, rich guy sia.
Lastly, we had a special mace demonstration by DM Ray Wee.

Cooking Competition -
At 9+ in the morning, we set out for Hougang Mall to shop for the cooking competition. The budget was $15 for each group. In addition to the $15 budget, we spent an extra $28 buying stuff for ourselves, lol.
When we came back, we brought everything to the area outside D&T lab to cook. In the end, the winner was Max's group, blah. At least we had fun.

Exchange with Whitley & Ang Mo Kio band
The bus left school at 1.30. We reached AMKSS at 2+. There, we went up to school hall. We played Flight of the Falcon, but only up til bar 61, damn.
Whitley band played Seventh Night of July and another song which name i forget, lol.
AMKSS band played Der Vogelhandler, Merry Widow, some trombone soli song, and one other.
After the exchange, we went for dinner. Our group went to McDonalds for dinner. Each person got $4 from the teachers.

Nightwalk -
After dinner, we went back to the tents to get our stuff and waited. Soon later, we got a briefing from the Ex-cos about the Nightwalk. We were supposed to walked to Sengkang MRT and back. And on the way, we had to take pictures of five things.
1. A red car 2. A cat 3. Bus 161 4. Public telephone booth 5. Sengkang MRT sign
Each group left 5 minutes after the other. Gavilan and Timothy tagged along with our group. First, we walked to the area under Joshua's block cause a cat always sleeps around there. And we managed to find it, under a telephone booth to boot.
And on our way to Sengkang MRT, we got a picture of a red car and bus 161. Theres also video evidence by Joshua's camera and Gavilan's N70, lol.
We reached the MRT station at like 9.50. We got some shots and went inside CompassPoint. We went to 7-11 to get some drinks, and then walked back.
Though we were one of the last groups to leave, we were 1st to reach back. Well, not really. Kiong Tai's group came first but they took the train back.
