Yes, regarding some issues on a friend's blog. I wish to comment on it too. No offense anyway, i'll be crude. Just pointing out my views on your post.
To clear up all doubts first, i am not the one who tagged as 'annonymous'. I am also not the one who tagged as 'gary' on 10 august. Check the IP addresses if you have any doubts.
- "First of all, personally for band, i feel that its a waste of time. Why do we waste our time blowing these instruments and get yourself so commited to the extend that band is like your god or something?"
Well, maybe to you it is. But all of us in the band have learnt many things. We have great seniors and friends in the band. We have great teachers and alumnis who support us. We have also learnt how to play music and our instruments.
And for those of us who have performed in concerts and performances, its a valuable experience to us. When we play in competitions and bring back a medal for our school, isn't just like how you compete in chess competitions and honour the school(which i don't really like, of course) . Theres all this buzz and adrenaline which you can't compare anywhere else. Band isn't about scoring many cca points, but about the enjoyment of playing good music together with you friends. Playing in concerts, participating in competitions with your friends. Crying together if you did badly. Laughing and celebrating together if you did great.
- "At the end of the day after o levels , WOW CCA POINT A1!! SO DAMN FUCKING HAPPY!!!! But.. look at your o level results... 24,25 points. Minus off maybe get 23. How far can you go?"
1 cca point? I don't think so, many of us have a lot already. So you think life is about about studying hard, getting a lot of cca points and going to a good JC? Just because we spend a lot of time on band, doesn't mean we don't study and our results are terrible. An extract from Alif's blog > "BUT SOME, are in 3E1, bright & intelligent people. Joseph Lee Yi Hao, 3E1'06, Euphonium, Deputy Drum Major/Chief Section Leader, had 6A1s for his sec 2 EOY's. if he did ok in o lvls, saaay 12. thats -2 off and that's 10. and that's JC for him, and another SYF. an alumni, Timothy Misso. from what i heard from shermann, he got to SAJC by his prelim scores. yea, and he took CLB. Band is like another subject to excel in."
- "Do you expect yourself to blow that damn instrument for life?"
If possible, yes. That's how composers, conductors, instructors and many good bands are born. They get payed to conduct, to compose and to perform. All of them gets payed doing the things they enjoy. Its not like they don't earn much either. Theres Mr. Sukit, our conductor. He's from thailand and he has a Bachelor degree in western music performance. He's been playing the tuba for 14 years. He currently takes on 3 schools. I don't know how much he's earning, but you can be sure its a lot.
And then theres Mr. Leng, our ex-conductor. He's in the philwinds, concert master somemore. My friend's friend says he has a 5 digit salary from 1 school. And he has 6 schools if i'm not wrong.
- "Just like the elementz. I've learn to really explain to people about my project without being nervous and shivering. Well, you might think thats like, 'HAHAH LIKE THAT ALSO SCARED'. But for certain people, thats a psychological barrier. For me, whom have achieved and overcomed the fear, i think thats sense of achievement, or maybe just achievement."
Just like you said. We have performed many times, be it school NDP celebrations, WCG ceremonies or concerts. We have managed to clear the psychological barrier, just like you. Isn't that an achievement and not a waste of time?
This is all i want to point out. Let me remind again i am not angry or anything. I just want to object against your opinion that band is a waste of time or anything like that. This post is not directed to only one person, but to all those who think band is not a worthy CCA.
